Winter 2023 Programs

For PWGFS families preparing for the Spring season, our offseason training offerings are open for registration. Use the link on the upper right-hand side of this site to get started.

The pitching program offers instruction for beginner and intermediate pitchers of all ages, and runs Jan. 7 to March 18. It is open to players who are simultaneously registering for a PWGFS season. See below for more detail. Sessions take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 6 and 8 p.m., and Saturdays, between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Phil Freeman and Larry Belk, both seasoned coaches at the travel, high school and recreational league levels, are the instructors.

Our catching program runs Jan. 7 to Mar. 18, and costs $100. It involves instruction on positioning, blocking, throwing to bases and more.

Winter hitting and fielding clinics take place on Feb. 26 and Mar. 12 for 8U and 10U players, and Feb. 19 and Mar. 5 for 12U and 16U players. They cost $30 per session.

Each of these will be held at the Rippon Middle School Gym, 15101 Blackburn Rd, Woodbridge, VA 22191.

Stay tuned for more detail about skills assessment (March 25) and the draft (March 26), the first day of games (April 17), and Opening Ceremony (April 21).

The price for the pitching program varies by age group:

• 8U - $295 (includes spring, fall and pitching program fee)
• 10U and 12U - $395 (includes spring, fall and pitching program fee)
  
• 16U - $435 (includes spring, fall and pitching program fee)

Winter 2023 programs

Does your daughter plan to pitch or catch this coming softball season? Has she shown interest, but never been able to try it in a game? PWGFS is now accepting sign-ups for its 2023 winter pitcher's and catcher's programs — a great value compared to private coaching — but space is limited, so don't wait to reserve your spot.

The programs are open to beginning and intermediate pitchers, and beginning catchers. Don't wait until the season starts for your player to start practicing. Now is the time to sharpen their skills!

Pitching clinic
Locations: Rippon and Potomac (limited days) Middle Schools
Dates: Tues., Thurs. & Sat., Jan. 7 through Mar. 18.
Times: One-hour sessions in the window of 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Saturdays, 9-11am.
Cost: $150, but priority goes to those players that have registered with the Spring/Fall discount (8U $295, 10U & 12U $395, and 16U/18U $405)
Instructors: Larry Belk and Phil Freeman. Larry and Phil have coached PWGFS, travel and at local Middle and High Schools.

Catching clinic
Date and time: Saturdays, 9:30-10:30 a.m. (Five weeks of instruction, five weeks working with pitchers in the pitching program).
Cost: $100
Instructor: Joe George, (17 years of coaching experience)
Location: Rippon and Potomac (limited days) Middle Schools

An adult must be present for either clinic; pitchers will need a catcher to work with, and the parent is the best choice. Experienced pitchers and catchers may work together, but an adult must still be present to learn the material so it can be practiced at home.

Aren't sure you're ready to commit? There will be a free introduction/demonstration and an assessment/parent discussion on Jan. 7 at Rippon. The programs begin in earnest on Jan. 10.
